Discuss your software requirements
Software ownership and access should be discussed before commissioning development. Paying for a build does not by itself describe the rights or materials included in an agreement. This article provides practical questions to take to your supplier; the agreed contract determines the arrangement.

A practical example
A business wants another developer to maintain its application in future. It should clarify access to source files, build instructions, hosting accounts and dependencies before that becomes urgent. Owning code and having enough information to operate it are related but separate questions.
Questions and answers
What should we ask before signing?
Ask which deliverables and rights are included, which components belong to third parties and what access the business receives. Have the contractual wording reviewed appropriately if the arrangement is material to your business.
Is source code enough to keep a system running?
Not on its own. Supporting materials may include configuration details, build instructions, account access and documentation. Specify a practical handover that a suitably qualified developer can use.
Who should control external accounts?
Agree who holds hosting, domain and service accounts, who pays the bills and how access changes when staff or suppliers leave. Avoid discovering an essential dependency only when you need to make a change.
Prepare for a useful first discussion
Bring an example of the work you want to improve, a typical record and an exception that currently causes difficulty. Explain who carries out each step and which existing tools are involved. Separate the essential outcome from optional improvements so the first proposal can address a manageable piece of work.
Agree how you will test the result before development begins. The people doing the work should check a complete journey, including a correction or unsuccessful outcome. Use those findings to refine the scope and clarify responsibilities for support after launch.
