Mobile app maintenance is the work needed to keep an app usable after its first release. Launching the app is a milestone, but customers will continue using it while phones, operating systems and connected services change.
Agree who looks after the app before it goes live. A clear arrangement helps the business respond to problems and plan improvements without treating every issue as a new project.
Separate faults from new features
A fault prevents an agreed function from working as intended. A feature request changes what the app does. Both matter, but they need different decisions about priority, testing and cost.
Keep a shared record of reported issues, including the affected device, app version and steps that reproduce the problem. “The app does not work” gives a support team much less to investigate than a specific example.
Include the services behind the app
Maintenance can involve the server, database, payment provider and other connections as well as the phone application. A working screen may still depend on a service that has stopped responding.
Document who manages each account and how the team will receive alerts. Define responsibility for checking backups, investigating errors and confirming that a recovery process works.
Plan updates and testing
Updates should be checked against the tasks customers use most often, such as signing in, booking or completing an order. Test changes in a separate environment where possible before releasing them.
Allow for changes in supported devices and external services. Keep a record of releases so support staff can identify which version a customer is using and what changed recently.
Agree a support process
Define how people report a problem, who assesses it and what response arrangements apply. A payment failure affecting everyone needs a different priority from a minor display problem on one device.
Review recurring issues rather than repeatedly applying temporary fixes. Digital Solutions can discuss ongoing app support as part of a development project, with responsibilities and scope agreed around the application involved.
