How Do You Protect Our Business Data in a Bespoke Software System?

Explore custom software development

Protecting business data starts with understanding what the system holds, who needs it and how it moves between staff, customers and other services. A customer address book, financial workflow and site inspection app can have different requirements. Security should form part of the agreed project from the beginning.

Decide who should see and change each record

List the user roles and the tasks each role needs to complete. A field worker may need the details of an assigned job without seeing every customer account. A finance user may need invoice information without permission to change system settings.

These rules must be enforced by the application, including requests made directly to its backend. Hiding a button is not enough to stop an unauthorised action. Access checks should be tested with realistic users and records.

Plan protection across the whole service

Discuss authentication, secure connections, hosting access, backups and the handling of sensitive information in logs. Consider the connections to other systems as well as the screens staff use every day. Credentials and access keys need appropriate storage and a clear owner.

Agree how updates, faults and security issues will be handled after launch. Backups also need a recovery process that can be checked; having a copy somewhere is not the same as knowing the service can be restored.

Ask for a clear project plan

Digital Solutions can discuss the controls appropriate to your workflow and agree them within the project scope. No particular security certification, hosting arrangement or feature should be assumed without that agreement.

Bring examples of the records you use and explain which information is sensitive. That gives the development discussion a practical starting point and helps the team identify where access, retention and recovery decisions are needed.
