Can software show which stock has stopped selling and is tying up money?

A stock total tells you what is on the shelf. It does not necessarily tell you which items have been there for months, which are reserved for an order or which are kept deliberately as spare parts.

A useful review needs more context than a list labelled “old stock”.

Choose what slow-moving means for your business

The system could show the last sale, last issue to a job, current quantity and recorded purchase cost. You would decide which activity matters and how long an item can remain inactive before it should be reviewed.

A seasonal product and an emergency spare need different treatment. Recently transferring an old item between stores should not automatically make it appear newly sold.

Separate a review flag from a purchasing decision

An item could be flagged because it has had no qualifying movement for an agreed period. The office could then check open orders, reservations and planned work before deciding what to do.

The software might help prepare a discussion about reducing orders, returning goods or running a promotion. It should not assume that every inactive item is unwanted or automatically mark it down.

Use figures that people can explain

Agree whether the report uses the last purchase cost, an average cost or another approved basis. Returns, adjustments and incomplete opening records can affect the result. Someone reviewing the total should be able to open the movements behind it.

A report based on unreliable stock balances will not become reliable simply because it appears on a dashboard.

Start with a stock-review screen

A first version could list items for review, explain why each appears and let an authorised person record an action. Digital Solutions can help connect that view to the stock records your team actually maintains.
