Before You Spend More on Marketing, Check These Basics

Before You Spend More on Marketing, Check These Basics

The video “STOP Spending Money On Marketing TODAY!” has a deliberately strong title. Use it as a prompt to review your spending, rather than assume every business should immediately stop every campaign.

This Cofi teaching session is presented by Rob Steadman, who runs the free Cofi Business Network.

Find the point where customers get stuck

Check whether the offer is clear, the advertisement reaches a relevant audience and the next step works. If customers cannot understand the price or receive no reply to an enquiry, buying more attention may increase the same problem. Look beyond impressions to the useful outcomes for your business. Record what a customer does after seeing the message and where the process becomes difficult. You may need a clearer explanation, a more relevant destination or a better follow-up routine. When you do test paid marketing, define the purpose, budget and review point in advance. A deliberate test is easier to learn from than spending simply because you feel you should advertise.

Three actions to try

  • Review the offer and the customer’s next step.
  • Check how enquiries are handled.
  • Identify what evidence would justify further spending.

Does free business support mean advertising is free?
