SaaS Multi-Tenancy: Keep Each Customer’s Workspace Separate

SaaS Multi-Tenancy: Keep Each Customer’s Workspace Separate

SaaS multi-tenancy allows one platform to serve several customer organisations while keeping their workspaces logically separate. Each organisation may have its own users, records and settings within the shared product.

For a business owner, the practical question is how the platform identifies the organisation behind every action and prevents information from appearing in the wrong workspace.

Define what belongs to an organisation

List organisation-level records such as customers, projects, documents and subscription settings. Some information, such as a shared help guide, may belong to the platform rather than an individual organisation.

Make the distinction explicit. A developer should not have to guess whether a report, uploaded file or background task is shared or customer-specific.

Plan users with more than one workspace

Some people may work for several organisations or administer more than one account. Decide how they switch workspaces and how the current organisation is displayed.

Avoid assuming that every user belongs to exactly one company if your intended customers need another arrangement. Permissions can differ between workspaces even when the person signs in with the same account.

Consider settings and platform administration

Customers may need their own branding, working hours or approval rules. Define which settings are adjustable and which are fixed across the product.

Platform support staff may need exceptional access to resolve problems. Agree how that access is authorised and recorded rather than granting unrestricted visibility by default.

Test separation throughout the platform

Check search results, exports, attachments, notifications and background processing as well as ordinary screens. A workspace boundary must hold when users follow a direct link or request a record indirectly.

Use at least two test organisations with similar records to expose mistakes. Digital Solutions can help plan a SaaS platform’s organisation model alongside its features, so customer separation is a foundational design decision.
