Native or Cross-Platform App Development: Which Suits My Business?

Native and cross-platform development are different ways to build a mobile app. The right approach depends on the features, devices and support requirements, rather than one method being best for every business.

What do the terms mean?

Native development uses the tools and interfaces associated with a particular platform. Cross-platform development can share substantial parts of the application across platforms, while still requiring some platform-specific work. Your customer mainly cares whether the app works well. Ask the developer to explain how the proposed approach handles your actual requirements, including device features, integrations and performance-sensitive tasks.

Compare the complete lifecycle

  • How much of the app can realistically be shared?
  • Which functions need platform-specific implementation?
  • How will each supported device be tested?
  • Are important libraries actively supported?
  • How will operating system changes be handled?

An existing app’s technology also matters. A change in approach should account for migration and maintenance, not just the appeal of a new framework.

Questions and answers

Is cross-platform always cheaper?

No. Shared work can reduce duplication, but complex native integrations or unsupported features can change the estimate. Compare proposals for the same scope.

Is native always faster?

There is no useful blanket answer for every application. Identify performance requirements and test the relevant tasks on representative devices.

Will one codebase remove the need for separate testing?

No. Different devices, permissions and platform behaviour still need checking, even when much of the application is shared.

What should I ask before agreeing a technology?

Ask why it suits your requirements, what limitations remain and how another developer could maintain it. The explanation should connect the technology to the business need.
