What Features Should Be in the First Version of My App?

The first version of an app should let a defined audience complete a useful task from beginning to end. Choosing the scope around that journey is more practical than including a little of every possible feature.

Describe the core journey

Write a short example: a customer registers, chooses a service, books a slot and receives confirmation. Then identify what staff need to manage that booking and what happens when the customer makes a mistake. Features required for that journey belong in the initial scope. Other ideas can be recorded for later without disappearing. For example, a recommendation engine may be optional while a clear booking confirmation is essential.

Include the less visible work

  • Account and permission rules where required.
  • Validation and understandable error messages.
  • Essential administration and customer support tools.
  • Integration and payment failure handling.
  • Testing, deployment and release preparation.

A smaller scope should still work reliably. Removing error handling or basic administration can leave staff unable to support the product even when the main customer screens look complete.

Questions and answers

Is the first version the same as a prototype?

No. A prototype may simulate interactions. A first live version needs to perform its agreed tasks and be supportable in real use.

How should we prioritise features?

Ask whether each feature is necessary for the core task, removes a significant risk or provides evidence for the next decision. Rank optional improvements separately.

Can features change during development?

Yes, but their effect on cost, timing and other work should be agreed. Keep a visible scope rather than treating every new idea as automatically included.

What should we learn after launch?

Check whether users complete the task, where they need help and which missing feature causes a genuine problem. That evidence can guide the second release.
