Mobile App Push Notifications: Reminders Customers Actually Need

Mobile app push notifications can tell customers that an appointment is approaching, an order has changed or an action needs their attention. The useful starting point is the event behind the message: what happened, who needs to know and what should they do next?

An alert should make an existing task easier. Sending more messages does not automatically make an app more useful. Build a small set of relevant notifications before adding promotional campaigns.

Choose the events worth announcing

A booking app could send a confirmation when an appointment is accepted, a reminder beforehand and an update if the time changes. An order app might announce dispatch or a collection window. Keep those events separate so customers can choose which updates they receive.

Write down the trigger, recipient, timing and destination for every message. Also decide what happens if staff change a record twice or cancel an appointment after a reminder has been scheduled.

Take customers to the right screen

If a notification says a document is ready, tapping it should open that document or its relevant record after any necessary sign-in. Sending someone to the home screen creates another search task.

Keep notification text short and avoid including sensitive details that could appear on a locked phone. The message can explain that an update is available while the app displays the full information securely.

Give people clear preferences

Explain the benefit before requesting notification permission. Include settings for the types of update your app offers and keep promotional preferences distinct from operational messages. Customers should be able to change their choices later.

Some people will decline notifications or mute them. Important information should still be available within the app, with another agreed communication route where the business process requires one.

Test timing and repeated events

Test changes, cancellations, different time zones and devices that reconnect after being offline. Check that retrying an event does not send the same message repeatedly. A reminder that arrives after an appointment has been cancelled damages confidence.

Measure whether users complete the intended task, alongside opt-outs and complaints. Digital Solutions can help plan notifications around the actions your customers need to take.
